Impressions of the "Fists of Fury 2"

At 12th April 2003 the 2nd edition of the HEAT Fight Label "Fists of Fury" took place in Mössingen near Stuttgart. This event was a MMA gala in connection with this year's Shido Grand Prix. Organizer Bruno Rico and the Shido Team once again have achieved good work! The spectators of the complete full Steinlachhalle got to see without exception exciting and hard fights as well as a successfull frame program! The international media as well as 3 TV stations (RTF1, the US station AFN-Euro and the French Pancrase TV) were present and did some reports and TV interviews. Highlight of this event was the world title fight in Shido middle weight between Champion Peter Angerer and his challenger Shonie Carter from the USA. Shonie "Mr. International" Carter from Chicago in the meantime is placed at no. 7 in the Japaneese SHOOTO results table and has an impressive fight record! Shonie was fighting nearly at all famous MMA events, like f.e. "UFC", "King of the Cage", "Ironheart Crownweltweit" or "Shooto" in Japan, just to mention some of them! Peter Angerer last year defended his title successfully against the Japaneese Keniti Sato and the insider of the szene were highly curious for this year's encounter!

The Main Fights

Shido Worldtitle -76 KG

The main attraction was as mentioned the encounter between Shonie Carter (USA) who was fighting against the title holder Peter Angerer (GER). From the beginning of the fight Peter set up enormous pressure and tried with his dreaded kicks to cover Shonie (last year we have seen how Peter has used his foot techniques against Sato) ! Though Shonie was very well prepared for Peter and didn't allowed any more distance fights after Peter succeeded to get through to the head of Shonie by initial standup fight with hard punches. He immediately searched the infight and avoid therefore the punch and kick positions! Peter had some bad luck because he broke his right middle hand during the first exchange of blows (and later the right middle foot, too)! Shonie knocked Peter down repeatedly and tried to get into a good position for early finish. But here Peter's experience in ground fight appeared! He let Shonie work and seemed to be quite relaxed, while he placed himself technical high-quality in as favourable as possible positions against the different attacks!

So the 1st round has passed after 5 never-ending minutes! The same scene was presented in round 2 and as well in round 3 . Initially volleys of head punches and low kicks were exchanged to go over into ground fight afterwards! The complete fighting time of 3 x 5 minutes was used for fighting and those who have some knowledge of Vale Tudo, with permittet punches to head on the ground, know as well that this fighting time can be only survived when the fighters on the ground principially get wedge tight in holding positions and so the exchange of blows mostly prevent! Who is thinking now that Peter could stand 15 (!!!) minutes so strong in this fight against the world class fighter without giving him a change to achieve a submission or KO, as it did NOT came to head punches on the ground, was wrong! Shonie more than once fought for the mountposition and was beating continuously on Peter! Peter got incredible many punches, but he didn't give up and was fighting back bravely until the end! Arriving back in the USA Shonie certainly can NOT claim that it is a walkover in a German MMA - event, to end his fight by punches to head in short time! Because in this fight the referee didn't intervene prematurely or stop like in many other fight shows! Here our total respect is for Peter Angerer, who certainly has made against Shonie Carter a very big contribution for the complete German MMA sport! We will keep our fingers crossed for Peter's return match! And of course a very huge thank you to Shonie, who now was the 2nd time at a HEAT Gala in Germany! Fight Photos

Shido Worldtitle -65 KG

A further title fight was the encounter Brian Davis (USA/GER) v.s. Aidar Makhmetov (Kas). Brian was immediately attacking Aidar and in this fight they didn't fought long time in stand up position, too. Aidar managed to bring Brian fast to ground! Here the positions changed in fast speed. This fight was one of the shortest of this evening, as Aidar could place an arm tackle, where from no escape was possible any more for Brian. Unfortunately this encounter was ending a little bit "unfair", as Brian was permanently tapping, but Aidar didn't loosen his tackle. As well Aidar didn't react of the taps from the referee. Not until the referee made an intervention aggressively Aidar let go of the lever! Brian had to be kept back in the ring by the opposing assistant, that he didn't revenge for this unsportive attack! If this action from Aidar was happening intentionally or in fighting event under adrenalin is not clear, as Aidar was looking irritated when he just got loud whistles from the spectators for his victory and Brian has left the ring before the presentation ceremony! Finale Grand Prix -70 KG

In the finale of the Grand Prix tournament was fighting Hassan Seddik (FRA) who has already shown a nice and hard fight against Lovorco Petracja in the pre fight! Now he fought against Phillip Schade (GER), who has got a free ticket because of fight refusal and now had his first fight of the evening! Phillip (18), a direct pupil of national coach in Shido Peter Wenzel, impressed with this fight the spectators and the present experts! He showed a very nice and flowing course in stand up fight with high kicks and punches and on the ground as well he was a forceful opponent. The whole fight had an enormous speed which was maintained until the end of the 3rd round! Both fighters spared no pains! In standing positions as well as on the ground they handed out and took a lot of punishment and showed a fantastic technical and conditional perfornmance. Phillip could show some good kicks to the head of Hassan, who then responsed with hard low kicks. Both fighters could achieve once again the mount position on the ground and could hit several times with punches to head, but in this fight as well there was no give up! At the end Hassan Seddik who has set Phillip the most time under pressure has achieved the victory! Congratulation to both fighters who were a real addition to this gala, especially to Phillip, who certainly will let to know any positive news from him! Fight Photos

Super Fight -89 KG

Very excitied were the spectators and the present media for the super fight Goran Vidakovic (GER) v.s. Pierre Guillet (USA). Goran had defeated in his last fight in Russia at the world famous event "Russia v.s. the World" his Russian opponent in only 50 seconds by submission! Originally Goran should fight against Bad Boy Lars Besand from Denmark, who had to cancel this fight because of private reasons! Pierre Guillet was no minor opponent for Goran, as Pierre has more than succeeded among others at the Britain "Ultimate Combat" Fight Label (Promotor Dale Adams)! From the beginning you could see that these two fighters have all necessary talents, techniques as well as staying power and explosivness at their disposal! The fight started with really hard low kicks from both fighters which were certainly heard in the stands on the very top when hitting! Goran placed some knee punches, while Pierre was pushing him into the edge. Power was in this fight. Goran was setting Pierre permanently under pressure and went with hard punches into his opponent. Pierre was ducking in a flash with exact timing and brought Goran to ground with first class Ringer Take Down. This fight didn't take as well not so long as Pierre could force Goran to give up during the 1st round! After some changes in position on the ground both fighters placed a foot tackle at the same time. Goran had Pierre's left leg while Pierre was tackling Goran's right leg. Here the American had a better position and Goran had nothing left as to tap out! We are really able to be more than excited for the return match of this encounter and these two fighters could have ideal qualification for a title fight. Fight Photos

Finale Grand Prix -65 KG

We will come to another interessting encounter in the bounds of the Grand Prix! In finale of the class up to 65 KG Robert Westermann (GER) and Dave McLaughlin (UK) were opponents. Robert had won against Sebastian Lebloas (France) in the 1st round of the pre fights by submission (strangle technique). Dave a British fighter of the team from Ultimate Combat Promoter Dale Adams has won against Jean-Pierre Jarry (France) in the pre fight by submission (arm tackle) in round 2. After initial exchange of blows in this encounter Dave had the German standing at the rope of the ring and tried to place a Guillotine Choke, but from this holding Robert could get free. In further process of fight the strength of Robert once again was shown, who was starting purposefully the ground fight with his brand mark, a hip throw like lightning, which was lasting nearly over the complete 1st round with good techniques and staying power. The 2nd round was marked by many punches to head from the mount position, where Robert was the more active and dominant fighter. Here the qualities of acceptance and the fighting spirit from Dave appeared, who was covered similar as in the fight from Angerer/Carter with quite a lot of punches from Robert, but didn't give up. Dave was able to get out of this explosive situation and placed an arm tackle at Robert. This was the cause for the referee to stop the fight in favour of Dave! Here the opinions divide a little because some people think that Robert could get out of this tackle, others know on the other hand that it can be very dangerous to let pass such a tackle! However, the descision by fight referee is to be respected at last as here during the complete evening very good work was achieved by the referees! Fight pictures Fight Photos

Featured Fights

The pre fights In the pre fights were fighting in order backwards Brian Gassaway (USA) against Stephane Jamet in Super Fight -76 KG. During fight process Brian could place very effektive punch techniques and was sending Stephane with really hard straight rights multiple time to his seat of trousers. Brian was coached by Shonie Carter, who gave exact instructions Brian could convert in first class mode. Brian won after excellent standup fight as well as high experienced ground fight in the 2nd round by back arm tackle. Fight Photos ***** Furthermore in Super Fight -89 KG Shain Tovell (UK) an Ultimate Combat Veteran from Great Britain was starting against Mihaljo Mihnjak (GER). Here we saw a good fight, too, which was settled for the most part on the ground. Shain has brought his opponent quite often in difficulties, like here in the picture with a Guillotine Choke, and could defeat Mihaljo in the 1st round by submission. Fight Photos ***** In the bounds of the Grand Prix now Hassan Seddik (FRA) and Lovorco Petracja (Ger) were standing opposite. This fight was very exciting and hard at the same time! Here was mainly fought in stand up position, which was getting to a real gem for the spectators. Hassan was covering Lovorco from the beginning with real hard low kicks and punches and it seemed to impress Lovorco just a little bit for a moment. But suddenly he turned over to absolute confrontation and came through with very good punching techniques like Jabs and uppercuts. In the second round it continued in the same way and both fighters had to stand many hits. Seddik won this exciting and explosive fight in the 2nd round by submission! Fight Photos ***** The Grand Prix Match -65 KG was carried out by Jean-Pierre Jarry (FRA) and Dave McLaughlin (UK), a further Ultimate Combat Veteran! This fight was lasting until the 2nd round, too, in which hard action was presented to the spectators. Dave pressurized Jean-Pierre on the ground nearly could finish this encounter with a Guillotine Choke! Jean-Pierre on the other hand could get free again and was fighting back bravely. In the 2nd round Dave could place an arm tackle from the ground position. Jean-Pierre tried to get free and came back onto his feet with Dave at his arm. It was a spectacular scenario which there was shown as Dave was pulling tight the tackle to the French! Jean-Pierre had no other possibility as to tap out! Fight Photos ***** In the class up to 65 KG of the Grand Prix now Robert Westermann (GER) was meeting Sebastian Lebloas (FRA). Already prior we have reported from the power in ground fighing from Robert, who can convert his techniques as fast as lighnings and precisely. The initial stand up fight with low kicks and punches was submitted by Sebastian very fast, changed from phase of clinch into ground fight. Here the positions changed and both fighters came alternately into the mount position! Robert then could place a shoke so that he could force Sebastian in the 1st round to give up. Fight Photos

Undercard-Fights

Fight no. 5 of the pre fights after Shido B class regulations was a women fight between Felicitas Himmelsbach (GER) from Nürtingen v.s. Aurelie Hautier (FRA) from Pancrace France! Here the spectators got to see a first class Mixed Fight Match, which offered everything to satisfy a freefight fan! Those two opponents showed that a women match doesn't have to have less quality than those of male fighters. There we saw explosive hardness combined with technical high quality explosive effect, which was kept through all distances over the complete fighting course! This match Felicitas began with nice low and high kicks combined with good punches. But Aurelie could offer hard counter blows as well. At ground fight the good team work between Felicitas and coach Peter Angerer was shown as he gave exact instructions from the edge of the ring. In round 2 Felicitas could place some good roundhouse kicks to the body as well as knee kicks to the head. In the following ground fight she put a choke into position which forced Aurelie to drop out. Here once again a compliment to both fighters with the hope to see further women fights of such a quality in Germany! Fight Photos ***** A further pre fight in Shido B - class up to 76 kg was the fight of Frank Löhle (GER) from Nürtingen against Chris Blodgett (GER) of team Björn Friedrich from Obertshausen. Björn and his fighters could achieve several successes in Shido in recent past, like for example at the house galas in February and March! The fight between Frank and Chris was lasting over the full time of 2 x 5 minutes and finally was rated by decision of points in favour of Frank Löhle! In the 1st round we saw Frank as the more active and a little bit superior fighter, but in the 2nd round it was well-balanced again and Chris was a stubborn opponent on the ground! Fight Photos ***** At the frame program of this event Driton Krasniqi (Shidokan Switzerland) hold a Thaibox fight against Dennis Titscher (No-Limit-Gym Villingen). Driton finished this fight which was marked by hard low kicks and combinations of box punches with a roundhouse kick to body and gained victory by KO in the first round! Fight Photos ***** In Shido B - class up to 70 kg Franco De Leonardis (GER) from Hanau and Thomas Riehle (GER) from Mössingen were facing each other. Thomas coached by Peter Angerer had to do quite a lot with Franco on the ground. Franco could place in the first round of this fight a choke from back position which forced Thomas to drop out! Fight Photos ***** The last fight which we will present here (which was fight no. 1 of this evening of course as we have reported backwards from the main fights), was the match in Shido B - class up to 65 kg. Here Guiseppe Borgio (GER) from Metzingen was fighting against Alexander Fritz (GER) from Backnang. At the beginning of this fight nice high and back kicks were used! In further course Guiseppe placed a choke in the phase of ground fight where escaping wasn't possible any more for Alexander. Submission in round 1! Fight Photos *****
